This Saturday, Fairfield squares off against conference foe Marist at 1:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
The Stags (6-7) have a 2-0 conference record. Marist (9-4) is tied with Fairfield and Siena at 2-0 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes’ two victories came against Loyola and Manhattan.
Marist has dropped two out of its last three games, with the last loss coming against nationally-ranked Maryland on the 30th of December.
The 2006-2007 Red Foxes are a formidable group.
At one point during the season, they had a seven-game winning streak. During that streak, they won by ten plus six times.
So far this season, they’ve won by 30 or more four times – one of which was against Manhattan.
On the year, Rachele Fitz leads the Red Foxes with 13.4 points per game. Close behind her are Meg Dahlman with 11.7 and Julianne Viani with 10.7.
Fitz and Dahlman also lead the team on the boards with seven rpg apiece.
Marist leads the MAAC in both scoring offense and scoring defense. However, close behind at the # 2 spot on scoring offense is Fairfield, who also packs some pretty impressive defensive play.
The Stags get lots of offensive and defensive boards and currently lead the MAAC in rebounding offense. They also get loads of steals each game.
Given both squads’ ability to score and hold opponents to low point totals, the game may very well come down to little things like rebounding and transition defense/offense.
Fairfield is strong in each of these categories, so look for a quick turnaround from Tuesday’s loss to St. Francis.
The Stags cannot dig themselves into a hole early on like they did earlier in the week.
Since momentum will be a factor, they must attack, and attack early.
